The Challenge of Corn Gluten Meal Drying
Corn gluten meal (CGM) and corn gluten feed (CGF) are valuable high-protein co-products of corn wet milling. Drying these sticky, moisture-rich meals in rotary or flash dryers is highly energy-intensive. Over-drying burns the protein content and wastes expensive steam; under-drying risks rapid product spoilage during storage. Keeping moisture at exactly 10.5% is the optimal operational window.
Inline Moisture Sensing
A corn milling facility integrated a USTECH ProLine17ES sensor at the exit of the rotary steam tube dryer. The sensor measures moisture and protein simultaneously. The moisture feedback loop was connected to the dryer steam pressure control loop, automatically adjusting dryer temperature based on the incoming wet crop load fluctuations.
Results
With live steam regulation, moisture variability dropped by 65%. Over-drying was eliminated, resulting in a 4.5% reduction in total gas energy consumption. The dryer return on investment was achieved in 4.8 months.
